The Spirit

of Ridgefield Crystal Lake Presbyterian Church

Living Waters—a concert by the Shallowford Presbyterian Church Youth Choir

On Sunday, June 6, at 7:30pm, the Shallowford Presbyterian Youth Choir from Atlanta, directed by Emily Floyd, will be here at RCLPC as part of their Chicago-area summer tour. The music they will sing “explores the theme of water: water as sustenance, water as a symbol for trouble/our faith in God in times of trouble, water as a source of hope, we are claimed by God using water in baptism.” We hope you’ll join us in the sanctuary for this fabulous opportunity to hear great music and to meet Presbyterians from another part of the country.

Help us offer hospitality
to the Shallowford Youth Choir!

On Sunday June 6, we need to provide dinner for the choir and their chaperones—61 people—at 5.45pm. Can you help? Talk to Teri for more details or to volunteer. That evening we also need to house the youth and adults (in groups of 2 or more) after the concert. All you need is a place for them to sleep and a place for them to shower, and a willingness to feed them breakfast and bring them back to church by 9am on Monday morning. Can you help? Talk to Teri. Thanks!

Share Your Music in Worship this Summer

Summer is around the corner. If you would like to share your music in worship this summer, please sign up on the sheets posted on the bulletin board outside the music room. Please contact Sherri Dees with questions or suggestions.

An Invitation to Celebrate!

Many of you remember Karen and Gary Salman, former long-time members of RCLPC. They will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary this year! We invite you to help us celebrate at a reception immediately following the 11:00 service on Sunday, June 6th in Fellowship Hall. Stop by for some cake, punch, and a chance to say “hello”. Hope to see you there! ~ Kristi (Salman) Geggie and Kim (Salman) Kerkbashian

Are you, or is someone you know, going into 8th grade (or older) next year and haven’t been on the confirmation journey yet? Plans are being formed for next year’s confirmation class, so please contact Teri ASAP if you’re interested! Thanks!

The Future of Our Church Needs Your Help!

Love, betrayal, fighting, jealousy, power ... sounds interesting right??

This can all be found in the Bible!! We are looking for Sunday school teachers and assistants for the 2010-2011 school year to teach our youth about the awesome stories found in the Bible and to share God’s love. No experience necessary. This rewarding commitment is about once a month. If you think you would be interested, please contact Karen Nelson for more information.

Climb Sky High with Share the Bounty!

Our donations to Share the Bounty during the growing season are used to purchase supplies for lunches given to those participating in the PADS program. This season we hope to raise $1400, which will cover lunch costs for the year. Please give generously and watch the flowering vine grow to the sky in the Connecting Link. We've been off to a great start with perennials and rhubarb. Salad greens are becoming available. If you're a gardener, check to see if you have any herbs able to be divided for the Share the Bounty table.

Fair Trade Coffee Cart

Did you know that coffee is produced from the
seeds of a cherry from the coffee tree?

Almost all coffee is grown in developing nations. It is the world’s second largest traded commodity – right behind crude oil. The coffee industry employs more than 300 million people worldwide, and over 50% of Americans are daily coffee drinkers. As consumers make conscious choices to support small farmers through purchases of fair trade coffee, the families’ lives are improved, and consumers receive a quality product. It’s a way we can affect positive change with our purchases, and it’s easy to do at the Fair Trade Coffee Cart in Fellowship Hall.

Coffee and tea will continue to be stocked through the summer, while chocolate will resume in the fall. See if any of the chocolate bars remaining on the cart through May are calling out to go home with you!

Itching to get your fingers into the dirt this spring?
Wish you had produce to bring to Share the Bounty?

RCLPC has space for a vegetable garden, and now we need to hear from the gardeners. A 4 x 4' plot is just about big enough for... a hill of zucchini, a couple tomato plants, a few pepper plants, several rows of carrots or beets, or two rows of beans, or whatever mixing & matching you come up with. All would be good sellers at the Share the Bounty table. If you're interested in tending one or two 4 x 4' plots, please contact Lois Johnson by May 30.

Bread Basket Ministry

Wanted: 1 organizer for the Welcoming Team’s Bread Basket Ministry. This Ministry delivers bread to first time visitors and is a wonderful welcome to RCLPC. If you are interested in finding out more about this ministry or becoming the coordinator please call Cynthia Lopuszynski.

PADS Lunch Changes

PADS has requested that we deliver the 25 summer lunches on Mondays and not Fridays as was previously done. Please see the new sign up sheet in the Connecting Link. We will be making lunches on Sundays, after the 9:30am service and delivering them the following morning. If you are available, do sign up. With just 4 people the lunches can be prepared in 30 minutes.

Notes from the Welcoming Team

Have you ever walked the halls of RCLPC and said hello to folks, but for the life of you, could not remember their names?

Happens to me all the time. That’s why a photo directory of the membership of the church would be so helpful. Oh wait, we already have one and it’s available in the church office. The Welcoming Team spent a good deal of time a while back, taking photos of those members that wanted to participate. We didn’t get everyone and would love to have our directory complete. If you didn’t get your picture taken or don’t like the one that’s included in the directory now, you can bring one in to the office, or send a jpeg by way of e-mail and Kim can include the new picture in the directory (email at office@rclpc.org).

If I do say so myself, Dave Palmer and I took some really nice pictures. Others brought theirs in or sent them in and were included. Our goal is to have a picture of everyone so that the next time you don’t know a name, you can look it up in your copy of RCLPC’s photo directory. A new photo directory will be available after August 1st, but you need to get your new pictures in now so you can be included in our next update.

If you have questions or need more information, contact Kim at the church office (815-459-1132) or me. ~ Dave Steele

P.S. Can you name all your church leaders? Check out the photos on the wall down the hall by the church office to see who the Deacons are and who is on Session.

Here is a springtime organizational tip:

Think about where your spare change accumulates. Does it pile up on a dresser top, in a kitchen drawer, on a living room tabletop, or in all of those places?

Well, wherever it builds up, please pick up a few of the "Spare Change for a Big Change" cardboard boxes at the entrances to the sanctuary. Take them home and put them in the exact spots where that messy change multiplies. In no time at all, you'll add more structure to your life…. and more spring to your step when you remember that you are contributing to a good and worthy cause. Thank you for your support!

Men’s Breakfast Group
June 5 at 8am

Our next Men's Breakfast is planned for Saturday, June 5th, at 8am at the Colonial Café Restaurant, Route 14 just east of Main Street in Crystal Lake. Besides good food and fellowship our next Men's Breakfast will feature a discussion about atheism. Chris Pickett will present some of the history of atheism and the frustrations experienced by those with scientific and logical minds when they have been confronted by belief systems. Are science and belief mutually exclusive? Come to listen and to share your thoughts. There will also be news of upcoming events and opportunities to serve. Come and join in.

Dear Men's Group,

The RCLPC Board of Deacons would like to thank the Men's Group for their generous donation to the Deacon's Emergency Fund from the proceeds of the Easter breakfast.  Your donation is a result of creative marketing, recruitment of volunteers, expert food preparation and hard work. As you know, the emergency fund provides assistance to members in need, and is a very worthwhile and meaningful source of emergency aid. The breakfast has become a meaningful tradition on Easter Sunday, where families can share a meal and fellowship with other members.  We greatly appreciate your efforts and the donation to the emergency fund.

Sincerely, RCLPC Board of Deacons

Missing!!

I am looking for the original church building and contents appraisal that was prepared as of 08-23-06 and was kept in the insurance drawer at the church office. If someone temporarily borrowed it, please return it to me and I will prepare you a copy if you have need of the data. John T. Fankhauser.
