Coming Soon! Deacon Family Groups:

...An old-new way of connecting and caring within our community Our congregation is growing, and it’s getting harder to know one another and to care for each other, not to mention the challenges of communication and connectedness! In an effort to continue to create and maintain a caring community, the Deacons are trying a new thing. The new Family Group ministry will help us build community and establish connections within our ever-widening circle. You should be receiving your invitation from your Deacon soon.

The Spirit

of Ridgefield Crystal Lake Presbyterian Church

There’s at least ONE stock that’s not declining in value!

Buying stock in our high school youth group is a great way to help with the summer trip to the Montreat Youth Conference, a time when our youth and leaders can grow in faith, learn together with other Presbyterian youth from around the world, and serve others in mission. Ten of our high school youth, along with five adults, will head to the North Carolina mountains for a week of learning about our calling, about God’s mission in the world, and about our faith. They’ll also spend time serving with the Asheville Youth Mission, so they can apply the things they’re learning even while they’re still learning them.

Why buy stock? What kind of return will you get?
Well—you will get a certificate saying you bought a share of the youth group’s trip from a particular member. You will also receive a postcard from that participant during the week they are gone, and close-up seating at the luncheon where they share their experiences with you.

How much is a share of stock in this trip?
One share costs $25. Feel free to buy from as many trip participants as you’d like!

When does this opportunity go public?
Stock will be on sale from May 3-31.

Who can I buy it from?
Alex Nelson, Amanda Nelson, Carl Wesa, Chris Palmer, Dale Wesa, Jessie Gronset, Kayleigh Jensen, Meredith Mitchell, Norma Thompson, or Samantha Koenig.

Help Needed for Youth Trip to Montreat!

Can you help our youth get to Montreat? They need the following things to make their trip happen and happen smoothly and well:
  1. ONE minivan capable of making a 1500 mile (round trip) drive safely and relatively comfortably. Youth leaders would be happy to trade cars with you for a week! (You know you want to drive a silver Honda Civic for a week...)
  2. someone to bring 14 brown-bag lunches (think sandwiches, fruit, chips, cookies....and please note we do have 2 vegetarians) to the church on the morning of June 13. We hope you’ll stay to wave us off and wish us well too!
(by having brown-bag lunches, we are hoping to avoid fast food until dinner time—two or three fast food stops in a day can’t be good for us!) If you can help with any of these things, please let Teri know by May 17. Thanks so much!

Tortillas and Trade

“Tortillas and Trade” will consider the trade relationships between the U.S. and Mexico. Lois and Rick Johnson traveled to Mexico in January with the Chicago Religious Leadership Network to understand the issues of poverty, hunger, globalization, and our role as Christians. You are invited to join them in Fellowship Hall at noon on Sunday, May 24, for a light Mexican lunch and program that explores how trade policies affect our neighbors to the South and why it should matter to us.

The Bible Bowl is Coming!

It’s a little later than your average bowl game, but just as fun! Our Sunday School students will be practicing up for the Bible Bowl, a friendly competition between students and between classes. With categories like “places in the Bible” and “sayings of Jesus” our Sunday School youth will be learning about Scripture and earning prizes—as well as earning some bragging rights! They’ll practice each week and then the Big Event—Bible Bowl I—will take place in Fellowship Hall at 10:30 on May 31. Hope to see you there!

What’s a spiritual gift? Do I have one? Can I have one??

Wednesdays May 13, 20, and 27, join Teri in the Fellowship Hall as we explore spiritual gifts—The Apostle Paul says everyone has at least one, but what are they? What does it mean to be gifted by the Spirit? What are MY spiritual gifs? How do I use them? Well—find out on Wednesdays from 6.45-8 in May! (Note: This is after the end of WEAVE, so we won’t be offering dinner, but feel free to bring dinner with you!)

Adopt a Plot

This summer we are trying a new idea for the church grounds. Lou and Kathy Rabe maintain the church garden areas, but they are getting older by the minute and need your help. Claim a small garden area to maintain during the growing season and not only will Kathy and Lou be there to guide you, but also will give out free cookies to the first 10 volunteers. Call Kathy and Lou.

Spring Chocolate Special

The Fair Trade Coffee Cart will continue to offer coffee and tea throughout the summer months, but the chocolate would not fare so well as the temperatures increase. Look for bags of 12 mini-bars for $2 on the cart, and stock up for the months ahead.

Offering of Letters Update

Thank you for your support of our annual Offering of Letters. We sent 85 letters to our elected officials this week urging them to rework U.S. foreign assistance to make it more effective in reducing poverty. ~ Mission Outreach Ministry

Palestinian Olive Oil

Come to fellowship hall this Sunday at 10:30am or 12 to get your bottle of cold pressed organic Fair Trade olive oil from Palestine. Palestinian farmers depend on groups like Import Peace to provide markets for their olive oil. You can make a difference by purchasing a bottle and helping sustain the livelihood of a Palestinian farmer. The grave economic realities of people living in the occupied territories are:
* 80% unemployment
* 60% live below the poverty line
* Average daily income is $2.00
Thank you for your support and consciousness of this difficult situation.

Come Join the Parade!

For the third year, Walt and Linda Rosquist are loaning the use of their truck for a Cookie Lift float in the Woodstock Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 25 at 10:30am. The Parade Committee has stipulated no water pistols and no throwing candy - we have to hand it directly to the people lining the parade route - so buy a bag if you would like to hand it out as you walk. We are publicizing the Dog Days of Summer Care Packages to be mailed to the troops to help them cope with summer in the Middle East, so you are invited to bring your well-behaved dog to walk on a leash with us! Please let us know if you will join us because we will need to let you know where our float will be in the lineup.

Also, we will have an Information Table in front of Read Between the Lynes Bookstore on the Square from 9:30am until the end of the parade. We will run a laptop slide show of the many photos that 1SG Andrew Fowles gave to us showing the Woodstock National Guard giving the Afghani children the 451 pairs of shoes and 531 pairs of socks that we mailed to them. Mary Moltmann and Ed Bennett.

Share the Bounty

Spring has finally arrived, and our Share the Bounty table is ready to receive perennials and garden produce. This year we’re adding something new to our Share the Bounty table – cut flowers! If you have beautiful flowers growing that you would like to cut and share, then Share the Bounty is for you! Every Sunday morning from May until October, you can bring all your extra homegrown veggies, fruits, flowers and plants to our Share the Bounty table located in the Connecting Link. Please don’t forget to label your plants. Then, feel free to take anything you may need from the table, and leave a free will offering in the container provided. If you would like to help us with this important mission, we need volunteers to clean up the table at noon each Sunday; just look for the sign-up sheet in the Connecting Link. All proceeds collected will be used to support our local PADS program. Thank you! Mission Outreach Ministry

Camp E.D.G.E. Counselors Needed

VBS Camp E.D.G.E. is still looking for Camp Counselors. These are individuals that take the kids from station to station and at the end of the day go over what they have learned. We also need any extra helpers. Even if you can only come for a few days and not the whole week, we can still use your help. Please call Denise Sokoloski or Jodi Iddings. Thank you

Join in to Help Decorate for VBS

VBS volunteers will be decorating on the following days: Monday May 18th at 6:30pm; Wednesday May 20th at 9:30am, and Thursday May 21st at 6:30pm. Please come to help on any day that you are able. Thank you!!
