The Spirit

of Ridgefield Crystal Lake Presbyterian Church

Attention all Men

The Men's Group will be meeting for breakfast on Saturday, July 3rd at Colonial Café on Rt 14 (in front of K-Mart) from 8-9am. We realize this may be a long holiday weekend, but many are still in town and our meeting still works into most plans. The discussion topic will be CURRENT EVENTS. We will have some articles from the papers to discuss, local and national and suggest that you bring an article or two to bring up also. These discussions are always lively and spirited. We hope that you can join us on Saturday July 3rd at 8am at the Colonial Café in Crystal Lake. See you there.

P.S. Our meeting in August will feature our own Fred Neuschel presenting on "Tall Ships on the Great Lakes" and the Tall Ship festival will be taking place in downtown Chicago for your enjoyment. More to follow.

Ann Legg to Serve in the PC(USA) Colombia Accompaniment Program

Ann Legg will be returning to Colombia this summer. She leaves July 23rd and returns September 1st. For the first 9 days she will travel with a group from the Chicago Presbytery. The group will fly into Medellin and from there travel to the Uruba region near the west coast of the country, which is one of the most conflicted areas of Colombia. There they will meet with leaders of the Colombian Presbyterian Church including Pastor Diego Higuita who, two years ago, spoke at WEAVE and met with the Mission Outreach Ministry Team. The final part of that delegation will be spent in Barranquilla on the northwest coast. The group will be able to visit with two other persons familiar to RCLPC members—Milton Mejia and Alice Winters.

When the Chicagoans leave on August 3rd, Ann will remain as an accompanier until the end of the month. As an accompanier she and her accompaniment partner, Kaitlin Porter, will serve as an international presence in solidarity with Colombian church leaders who risk their lives daily because of their commitment to the gospel and support of human rights.

During those six weeks please pray for Ann and Kaitlin and the entire Chicago delegation as well as Colombian church leaders and those displaced by the conflict.

Notes from the Welcoming Team

Have you ever walked the halls of RCLPC and said hello to folks, but for the life of you, could not remember their names?

Happens to me all the time. That’s why a photo directory of members and friends of the church would be so helpful. If you didn’t get your picture taken last year, or don’t like the one that’s included in the directory now, you can bring one in to the office, or email a jpeg to the church office (office@rclpc.org). A new photo directory will be available after August 1st, but you need to get your new picture in now so you can be included in our next update. If you have questions or need more information, contact Kim at the church office (815-459-1132) or me. ~ Dave Steele

Thank You Corner

Laurie Dayon has been the communion supply coordinator for three years and has recently decided to pursue other interests. Currently she is busy as director of Girls on the Run and caring for her family of four: husband Steve plus Caroline and Owen. A big THANK YOU goes to Laurie for her valuable contribution to our church life. Taking Laurie’s place will be Ann Poremba, who first came to RCLPC several years ago to attend our Cookie Walk and has recently found a church home with us. We welcome Ann to this ministry of our church.

Climb Sky High with Share the Bounty!

Our donations to Share the Bounty during the growing season are used to purchase supplies for lunches given to those participating in the PADS program. This season we hope to raise $1400, which will cover lunch costs for the year. Please give generously and watch the flowering vine grow to the sky in the Connecting Link. We've been off to a great start with perennials and rhubarb. Salad greens are becoming available. If you're a gardener, check to see if you have any herbs able to be divided for the Share the Bounty table.

Share the Bounty

Share the Bounty buyers and gardeners, would you be able to tidy up the table and deposit the Sunday's receipts a couple times this summer? This takes a few minutes after the 11:00 service. Please select dates on the list posted by the Share the Bounty table in the Connecting Link. That's a great help as our personal schedules vary so much in the summer. Thank you!

RCLPC Vegetable Garden

It’s time to grow “up”! Vegetables, that is. A raised bed vegetable garden has been constructed in the church meadow near the parking lot. Many thanks to to Tom Walters and Rick Johnson for assembling the garden. All it awaits is topsoil, which should be arriving soon.

Raised beds keep your feet out of the garden. The no-till approach means fewer weeds. Moisture drains easily. Vegetables grow bigger and better. You bend less, since this garden plot is 12” off the ground. Good reasons to plant a 4’x4’ section of vegetables you can enjoy and also contribute to the Share the Bounty table.

With ample time left in this year’s growing season, all you need to do is call Lois Johnson to reserve your section and decide what to plant. Carrots? Beans? A fall lettuce crop? Beets? Get those garden gloves ready!

Community Drum Circle

You don’t have to be a drummer to participate—everyone has something to offer, and everyone is welcome! A Community Drum Circle is a fun, family friendly event designed to build community and help us experience release, stress relief, healing, and empowerment. Rev. Phyllis Mueller facilitates these “drumming for health” drum circles in many places around the county. This community drum circle is held at RCLPC in Fellowship Hall every 4th Monday from 7-8pm. The next drum circle will be on June 28—hope to see you! For more info, contact Phyllis at 815.382.0004.

Session Highlights—May 25, 2010

  • One blended worship service will be held on July 4 at 9:30 am.
