Mix It Up: Faith, Politics, and Citizenship

Should Christians be engaged in politics? What does faith have to do with our political system? How can we take part in our democracy and maintain our Reformed theology, values, and identity? What does the Bible have to say, what does our tradition have to say, what do we have to say, and how do we say it?

This Wednesday, January 9, during the WEAVE adult education time, we will begin a conversation on faith, politics, and citizenship. We will be using study guides produced by the PC(USA) along with a couple of articles from Sojourner’s magazine.

Let us make this very clear: this is a non-partisan event (that is, it has nothing to do with any political party). We will not be endorsing specific candidates or proposals. Not only is that against the rules for a church, it’s also against the spirit of our tradition. We trust you to make faithful decisions for yourself. We won’t be telling you how to vote.

We will have four sessions:

January 9:   Faith and Politics—oil and water?
We will explore the meaning of politics and our historic understanding of Reformed Christians engagement (or non-engagement) in the political system.

January 16: An Engaged Faith—politics and/or volunteerism?
When we volunteer or donate money/things/time, we see results. Should we still be engaged in the political system? Why or why not? And what does it mean to be “engaged in the political system” anyway?

January 23: Voting as Act of Faith.
Why do we vote? When it’s time to vote, what do we take with us?

January 30: Making a Difference? Moving From Cynicism to Hope.
Cynicism is easy these days, but is it helpful? We’ll talk about ways we respond to and get involved in the government.

We will meet to discuss (in a civil, non-partisan way!) the way faith shapes how we think about government, public policy, and political discussion and action. The purpose of the class is not to try to tell you what to think. The purpose of the class is to get you to think about the relationship between your faith and your political views.

Teri will kick off the conversation on January 9th. It should be fun, civil, and illuminating. Hope you all can be there.

Thank You Notes from The Giving Tree

Dear Members,

Thank you kindly for all the wonderful items you collected from our wish list! We are in need of supplies to operate the clinic on a daily basis. Therefore the toiletries, the over-the-counter medicine and the children’s materials you collected will be used efficiently and wisely for the care of our patients.

We are fortunate to be coming up on our twelfth year of providing primary care to people in McHenry County who are uninsured or underinsured. We saw 748 patient visits this past October which sets an all time record of monthly visits since we opened the clinic in 1996. We are on track to see over 7000 patient visits for 2007.

It is through the generosity of individuals, organizations and churches, such as yours that enables us to continue caring for our patients.

We have a saying here, “We may not be able to change the world, but we can change the world for some people”. Thank you for helping us to do just that!

Sincerely,
Cathy Patenaude, Development Coordinator
Family Health Partnership Clinic

To Our Dear Friends at RCLPC,

Greetings,

Thank you so much for your generous gifts to our organization. The Office Depot gift certificates allowed us to purchase much needed computer equipment. The other office supplies and cards will get us through 2008!

Thank you so much for including us in your generosity! May the Lord continue to bless each of you in 2008 and beyond.

Collect Your Pennies!

We are collecting pennies for the 30-hour famine. We are trying to collect 29,000 pennies—one for each child that dies from hunger a day. Bring your pennies to Teri’s office. Thanks.

Souper Bowl of Caring

“Lord, as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us be mindful of those who are without even a bowl of soup to eat.”

This is the prayer that started the Souper Bowl of Caring in 1988. On Super Bowl Sunday, churches and charities collect donations of canned goods and money to support people in need. Over $8 million were raised nationwide last year. Here at RCLPC we raised $1300 last year, along with 30 canned items. This year, lets beat that! The food pantry needs your help!

On Sunday, February 3, bring your donations of canned goods and money to church. Youth will collect donations in large soup pots at various places around the church. Part of the purpose of the Souper Bowl is for youth to learn about caring for others—let’s all learn together!

Thanks for Helping Send 301 Christmas Stockings to Marines and Sailors in Iraq

Thanks to everyone who donated supplies and money to send 301 Christmas stockings to the Marines and Sailors at Al Asad Air Base in Iraq.  Church and community members donated about $11,500 worth of supplies and Christmas cards that were packed into 38 boxes on Nov. 16, and cost $878.20 to mail.  Thanks to all of you who helped stuff the stockings, pack the boxes, and load them into cars to take them to the Post Office: Pastor Richard, Karen Leuchtmann, Ed Bennett, Raechel and Daniel Sowa, Leanna Miller, Jody LeFevre, Bob Tripp, Sue Hayden, Marie Randall, Linda Rosquist, Dorothy Vick, Kathy Rabe, Mish Munz, Karen Nelson, Doug Crane, Raj Dencker, Pat Moll, Ann Jarvis, Beth and Laura Esche, Sherri Dees, and Kim Stewart. Twelve of the boxes arrived on Thanksgiving Day, and the rest arrived shortly after that.  Kim has included thank you notes from some of the Marines and Sailors, and if you go to our church website at www.rclpc.org, click on the menu on the left titled "Notes from our troops" to read them - they appreciated being remembered! ~ Mary Moltmann

Thank You!

I would like to thank everyone that donated items, set up, worked, cleaned up and participated in Jesus’ Birthday Party. What a joy it was to see so many of our youth having a good time. Thank you to Rick and Lois Johnson for helping with the storytime and then staying to have fun. To the “older youth”, Karissa Stewart, Kayla Stewart, Matt Hillman, Amanda Nelson, and Chris Palmer for taking time on a Friday night to participate in this event. Thank you also to Mary Moltmann for taking pictures and to Cindy Borre, Teri Peterson and my husband, Mark for making sure the food was on the table, the candles were lit and the movie worked. Yeah! I am grateful that so many of you went out with friends or had date night. It made my heart very happy to see so many parents with smiles on their faces. It told me that the night was a success. God Bless and Happy New Year. Raechel Sowa

A Note from Barb

"I would like to thank you all for the prayers, cards, phone calls, and visits during the last couple of months.  I am doing fine!  I did have a mastectomy.  There was no cancer in the lymph nodes, fortunately, and the surgeon was able to remove the rest, so there will be no radiation or chemo.  God has certainly been right by my side, and I do thank you all for that.  You are such a great part of my life and my family, and I am so thankful for your love and caring.” Sincerely, Barb Turley

A Letter of Thanks

A big thank you from the Middle School Sunday School Class to our members and to the community for helping with The Home of the Sparrow Christmas Ornament Project. After the August floods destroyed all of their Christmas decorations, we asked people to donate ornaments which would be given to the women and children for this and future Christmas celebrations. We were able to fill 64 bags with about 8 ornaments each, along with snacks and treats for the women and children at The Home of the Sparrow. The Middle School youth had a great time doing it and experienced what we have been teaching them - that God wants us to reach out to people in need! Wishing you a blessed New Year, Karen Nelson, Middle School Sunday School Teacher

Farm Bill Round-Up

Last March many of us took part in an Offering of Letters to our Senators. We asked them to improve the farm bill so that rural communities would be strengthened, hungry people in this country would be helped, and farmers in developing countries would be supported in their efforts to sell their crops.

You probably received a letter from your Senator several months ago, but it seemed this might be a good time to note what has occurred since then.

The farm bill passed by the House last summer added more funding for conservation, minority farmers, school meals in poor countries, and hungry people in the United States. In mid-December the Senate passed its version, also containing improvements. The Senate bill increases food assistance to hungry families over the next five years and includes the Hunger-Free Communities Act. Neither bill adjusted subsidies to affluent landowners or raised support levels for more crops. Now the two bills must be reconciled through conference.

In the bigger picture, the 2007 farm bill that will be signed into law later this year is likely to be better than the current system, and deeper reforms may be on the horizon over the next few years.

Our letters provided one way to place the concerns of hungry and vulnerable people before elected leaders. ~ Mission Outreach Ministry

Mission Trip Opportunity

Our next trip to Rosebud and Pine Ridge Indian Reservations will be June 22-27th.  If you are interested in exploring the possibility of being a participant, contact Joy Martin immediately.  Attendance at classes in May/June are mandatory for first time participants and a refresher course for those who have gone on previous trips with RCLPC members. ~ Joy Martin

NATIVE AMERICAN CONNECTION

Painted Pony, Inc. a Wind River Indian Reservation-based company has published the fourth in a series of all traditional, Native American stories told by Shoshone and Arapaho tribal members. The current offering is Yuse & the Spirit, by John Washakie and, as Governor Dave Freudenthal stated, this series is an important part of Wyoming’s rich cultural heritage.

The story of Yuse is about a Shoshone boy who is coming of age and the amazing journey he takes as he learns the value of adhering to the teaching and customs of his tribe. With watercolor pictures, it is a great read for students in the elementary grades. All profits from Painted Pony go to help fund non-profit activities. Further information can be found at the Website: paintedponyinc.com.

Or, if you prefer, look up the movie, Imprint, a supernatural thriller that took the top award at the American Indian Motion Picture Awards Show. It was produced by Linn Productions. Other Indian movies in competition for the prestigious award were Luna: Spirit of the Whale starring Adam Beach from Law and Order and the Sundance film, Four Sheets to the Wind. Screened and judged were 144 films.

Or, just stop by the RCLPC library and check out an issue of Native Peoples magazine and browse through the interesting articles like the life and times of Chief Quanah Parker, a great Comanche chief who, by all rights, is an American hero, as described in the Sept./Oct. issue. ~ The Native American Connection.

Attention Greeters

For those of you awaiting the new greeter’s schedule, it’s almost here. The Welcoming Committee of the Board of Deacons is working on getting it to you as quickly as possible. Dorothy continues to call to set up folks on a weekly basis and we hope to be able to get her away from that soon.

For those who may have forgotten, the Welcoming Committee consists of Dorothy Vick, Laurie Pohl, Rick Pohl and Dave Steele. We are trying to put together a greeter schedule that does two things. It keeps someone from having to make phone calls and, hopefully, create a bit of continuity at the entrances to the church. We’re going to be assigning doors and times for several months at a time, eventually scheduling a year in advance. Everyone will be given a list of people with phone numbers and e-mail addresses so that when the inevitable “problem” arises and you have to be gone, you can call someone and find a substitute.

Our questions are simple and easily answered. If you would: take a few minutes and see either Dorothy, Laurie, Rick or Dave at church; or call one of us with your responses; or send an e-mail to one of us. With this information we will be able to put a list together that should work. Phone numbers and e-mail addresses are in the church directory.

Thanks for your help.
