Teacher Assistants Needed

Please contact Karen Nelson or contact Patti Hill if you can assist the teacher in the Kindergarten & 1st grade classroom on Sunday mornings. No lesson planning needed, only your assistance please. Thank you.

Men’s Breakfast Group

Hey men of RCLPC!! 2010 will be upon us at our next Men's Breakfast. Join us as we start out the year on January 2 with a look back and a look forward as we share and reminisce, celebrate and complain, and just plain enjoy one another at the year's beginning. Look forward to seeing you at Colonial Cafe in Crystal Lake. Remember it is January 2 at 8:00am. Start the New Year among friends for breakfast!

PADS Lunches

A new signup sheet is in the Connecting Link for January and February. 30 to 50 lunches are usually prepared and with 5 assemblers the lunches can usually be made within 30 minutes. The number of people living on the street is increasing daily and just this small lunch can be so important to someone hungry. Please add this mission to your 2010 schedule.

Help Needed

We are in need of $20/$25 Jewel gift cards which can be used for gas and/or food. People are hurting and our need to assist people who come in during the week is growing. If you feel you could purchase a gift card or two, please place them in an envelope with your name marked on it in the offering plate. These cards will be turned into the church office where we can allocate them as needed and you will receive a letter confirming your donation. Thank you for your generosity.

Team Needs Help

If you can help create and run PowerPoint, then please contact the church office at 815-459-1132 or email office@rclpc.org. Thank you.

Christmas Eve Worship Services –
3:30, 5:30, 7:30, 9:00 & 10:30

The 3:30 service is designed especially for families with young children. We will sing Christmas carols and share communion.

The 5:30 service will be “Christmas Unplugged,” combining elements from our alternative and more traditional services. We will sing Christmas carols (with acoustic guitar accompaniment). We will also share communion and sing “Silent Night” by candlelight.

At the 7:30 and 9:00 services we will sing Christmas carols and the adult choir will provide special music. We will also share communion and sing “Silent Night” by candlelight.

The 10:30 service will be a quieter, more intimate experience, with soloists and/or small ensembles providing special music. We will still sing Christmas carols, including “Silent Night” by candlelight, and share communion.

We look forward to sharing Christmas Eve together. We hope you will plan to attend one (or more) of our services and will invite others to join us. Thank you.

End of Year Reminder
Regarding "Spare Change for a Big Change"

With the end of the year approaching, here's a friendly reminder to check your bedroom dresser top, kitchen drawers, under sofa cushions, and other assorted places around your home for quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies. If you discover any coins, please pick up one of the "Spare Change for a Big Change" cardboard boxes stored at the entrances to the sanctuary. Then, add your spare change to the box. Do not worry about whether the box is full. Partially filled boxes are more than welcome. Simply bring the box to a Sunday service and plunk it in the collection plate. Thank you for your help and support of this program.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

The Cookie Walk was a huge success it brought in about $3300 and we could not have accomplished this without all of you who participated in one way or another. You may have helped with advertising, decorating, cookie drop-off or set-up. Lots of you helped with the baking or on Cookie Walk Day and even those of you who bought and ate those delicious cookies and candy. Every one of you were so very important and a special thank you to the committee heads... Karen Hutchings, Laurie Dayon, Kathy Novak, Joyce Lande, and Marie and Bruce Randall. Until next year... Thank you, Nancy Blakely

Reminder to Cookie Walk Bakers...

Please pick-up your tins, plates or platters in the kitchen! Thank you!

Jesus’ Birthday Party

Thanks to everyone who helped make the Jesus’ Birthday Party happen: Karen Hutchings, Jean Joslyn, Bob Tripp, Connie Rasmussen, Rebecca Floyd, Joyce Rainey, Rev. Teri Peterson

Christmas Food Truck

Thank you and bless you all for the great job you did! RCLPCers are a wonder. Because of your help, support, good wishes and prayers we were able to give Christmas to about half of the poor families in Crystal Lake. One little girl got her friends together and collected 38 children’s gifts. (She is awesome!) All of you are! When you sit down to your Christmas dinner, may you be blessed knowing your efforts and support have done so much good this Christmas. ~ Nancy Vazzano

Read with the Pastor Book Group

Our next book for the Read with the Pastor book group will be How (Not) to Speak of God by Peter Rollins. This book sets out to explore our contemporary expressions of faith. Join us in the “Living Room” on Tuesday, January 19 at 7pm to discuss this great book from the founder of a new “emerging” church community. The book will be available through the church office for $16—please order by January 5.

Thanks from MSG Bill Soby in Iraq

I just wanted to say thanks again for all the packages and support. The guys loved it and we all appreciate very much what you all have done! It made our stay here more tolerable and brightened up the days for us. I do want to express my sincere gratitude though and I do thank you so much...words just can't sum it up! Thanks to you and all who carry the load making our service folks' lives a little brighter while we're overseas! MSG William F. Soby, FOB FALCON, IRAQ (RCLPC sent Bill a 6-ft inflatable Santa, strings of Christmas lights, a Christmas stocking with gifts, and 5 boxes of snacks, CDs and DVDs, batteries, and hygiene items that church and community members had donated. Thanks, Mary)

Note from our Troops’ Family Readiness Group Leader

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to the Cookie Lift for Troops fund. RCLPC was able to give $700 from the Cookie Lift for Troops fund to a Woodstock National Guard mom who is raising six children and undergoing chemotherapy. After receiving the check, she was in tears and wanted to say how very thankful she is. Thank you again so much for everything!
Jill Winling, Family Readiness Group Leader, D Co., 1/178th Infantry

MCC to Host “2010 People in Need Forum” – January 30

Volunteers and human service staff members can mark their calendars now to continue the holiday spirit of helping others with the 2010 People in Need Forum, featuring resources to help people in the community, from 8am to 12:30pm Saturday, January 30, 2010, at McHenry County College.

The forum connects volunteers and staff from human service, civic and faith-based organizations to community resources available for those in need. This annual opportunity for volunteers and staff from human service, civic and faith-based organizations started in 2003 and has steadily grown since that time. The forum provides an opportunity to learn about community resources available for those in need.

Workshops will provide practical information to help resolve care-receiver issues. Representatives from human service organizations will be in attendance with informational handouts on such timely issues as utility assistance, food stamps, transportation options, homelessness, domestic violence, legal matters, and loss of job. All participants will receive the 2010 People in Need Community Resource Directory. Admission is free and CEUs are available.

The People in Need Forum is sponsored by the McHenry County College Center for Non-Profit Leadership. Registration is available online at the website www.peopleinneedforum.org, or by calling the United Way of Greater McHenry County Volunteer Center at (815) 344-4483, or Bev Thomas at MCC at (815) 479-7792.

20th Anniversary of Fairhaven School in Alexandria, Egypt

Pastor Gendi Rizk has extended an invitation to RCLPC to come to Egypt for a March 30 and over Easter 2010 celebration of the 20th anniversary of Fairhaven School for the handicapped. We have made three trips to Alexandria and Cairo, the last one being 2006 and RCLPC has hosted teachers from Fairhaven School as they honed their skills at NISRA and Pioneer Center on two trips they made to McHenry County. This will be a trip you will long remember so whether you have gone previously or are a first-timer, do consider joining Maggie and Doug Crane who will be returning for their second trip. Several people in our congregation who have made previous trips there will be delighted to answer your questions including Joan and Jack Black, Dennis, Tina and Giana Stipati, Ann Legg, Joy Martin, Kim and Kayla Stewart, Laura Kay, the Mohlers, and many others. At present, we are supporting three girls at Fairhaven so that they can reach their full potential under the guidance of the loving and knowledgeable teachers there. ~ Mission Outreach Ministry

Life Line Screening at Ridgefield Crystal Lake Presbyterian Church

We will be hosting a community preventive health screening on Thursday, January 21, 2009. Life Line Screening will be offering ultrasound screenings for the prevention of stroke and vascular disease.

Life Line Screening includes an ultrasound of the carotid arteries in the neck to determine if you are at risk for stroke. The majority of strokes are linked to blockage caused by the buildup of plaque in the carotid arteries. A new screening is now available to detect atrial fibrillation, an irregular heart rhythm that is linked to up to 20% of strokes. A screening of the arteries of the legs is offered to check for peripheral arterial disease, which is the leading cause of diabetic amputations and an indicator of heart disease. Lastly, a test is performed to detect abdominal aortic aneurysms. All results are reviewed by a board certified vascular surgeon and sent directly to you with all the information you need to take to your own personal physician for any needed follow up.

These screenings are non-invasive, painless and affordable; the Stroke, Vascular Disease and Heart Rhythm Package (4 tests) is only $139. Also, a finger stick blood package including cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL/LDL, and glucose is available for an additional $50 with that package. Osteoporosis-$10 additional with ultrasound package.

PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. Appointment times begin at 9:00am and fill quickly; please call Life Line Screening directly at 1-800-324-1851 for your appointment or for more information.
