Brief Church Mission Statement:

We gather in grace, connected by a sense of place and purpose with generations of faithful servant-leaders who journeyed before us. We seek to open our hearts as we open our doors, with room for everyone, and to open all our senses to God’s life-affirming, life-changing presence through creative and diverse worship.

We grow in grace, not because we know all the answers, or even all the questions, but because we are drawn to God’s word and Christ’s example. We seek to be Christ’s family here and now, to embrace each other as we are, to nurture who we might become, to celebrate with one another in good times and encourage one another in hard times, to listen and learn and lead.

We go in grace, challenged and strengthened by the Spirit to do God’s work and show God’s love in the world. We seek to look beyond our walls and beyond ourselves, to see God’s image in every face, and to serve God’s people in every place life leads us.

The journey continues in an ever-widening circle of grace.

Brief description of the church/organization's programs or accomplishments:

Dynamic worship services include three on Sunday, a monthly Taize, and other special services which vary in style (traditional, alternative, and contemplative) and draw on creative expressions including visions of faith in arts, drama, and dance.

Our music excites and invites all who love anything from Bach to rock. This passion for music comes to life through choirs, bands, instrumentalists, and vocalists ranging from preschoolers through adults.

We offer educational opportunities each Sunday for children and adults. Our Wednesday evening avenues (WEAVE) program combines children’s music and storytelling, adult classes, and a time to share a meal.

Interfaith dialogue invites others in our community to teach, learn, and grow with us.

Ministry with middle school and senior high students include retreats, youth-led worship, service projects, and mission trips.

Mission projects include a long-term relationship with El Saray church in Egypt; advocacy for Native Americans; selling donated garden produce to aid the local food pantry; supporting troops overseas by sending care packages; a Cookie Walk opens the door to the community to raise funds for mission.

Local missions include senior assistance programs, food and shelter for the homeless, assistance to survivors of domestic violence, and housing for low income families.

An evolving board of deacons assists the pastors in congregational care.

Gifts, Skills and Experiences the congregation possesses to fulfill its mission:

Acceptance and inclusion: We strive to welcome and affirm people of diverse backgrounds and perspectives as we grow together in God’s grace.

Chosen, not frozen: We value creative thinking, are not afraid to try something new, appreciate spontaneity and humor, and are quick to laugh at ourselves.

Expertise: We have strong and authentic leaders and many others participate, serve, and lead.

Growth: We attract new members who bring ideas and energy. Our building expansion plans are moving forward.

Location: About 50 miles northwest of Chicago, hard to find, but worth the effort.

Passion: We show initiative and get things done. Examples: support for troops and their families, encourage use of Fair Trade products, youth-initiated fundraiser for survivors of domestic violence, formed RCLPC Café and Ladies Advent Dessert Night.

Accountability: Awareness videos and congregational updates are two such ways we communicate our current budget shortfall.

Pastoral leadership: Our associate pastor has helped to foster new energy and excitement, especially in children and youth ministries.

Staff: Our vibrant staff includes an associate pastor, music director, children’s choir director, administrative assistant, and custodian.

Then meets now: Our 1872 sanctuary (we are the county’s oldest continuing congregation) connects us with our heritage while using the technologies of today.

Key theological issues of the church and society that are reflected in the ministry of the congregation/organization:

We are increasingly concerned by a theology that offers a God of limited grace. In a world filled with fear, injustice, and judgment our response is to celebrate and live an undeserved grace. This grace that falls like rain renews and reminds us that we believe in God’s infinite love and forgiveness.

We practice the wide-open hospitality of Jesus and welcome all people into membership and leadership of the church. God’s peace is discovered through helping and loving our neighbors, regardless of their beliefs. We live our faith by working for peace and justice, experiencing God as the source of infinite grace and boundless compassion.

God’s word can be better understood when it is inclusive of others. We seek to love God with mind as well as heart through creative thought and deep reflection knowing all truth is God’s truth. We remain open-minded to the wonders God presents to us in science, culture, and other faiths.

We strive to be people of good faith and grace in everything we say and do. Although our vision is imperfect and we fall short of it, we feel called to embody a life-giving alternative to a more narrow and exclusive faith.
